- February 1 - The Chinese pirate Koxinga seizes the island of Taiwan after a nine-month siege then establish the Kingdom of Tungning. In response, Kangxi Emperor migrated all residents along the southern coast by 50 miles.
- March 18 – Short-timed experiment of the first public buses holding 8 passengers begins in Paris.
- May 9 - Samuel Pepys witnessed a Punch and Judy show in London; the first on record.
- May 16 - Hearth Tax introduced in England, Wales and Scotland.
- May 30 - Catherine of Braganza marries Charles II of England – as part of the dowry, Portugal cedes Bombay and Tangier to England.
