Obituary
The death is announced, in his 37th year, of the Earl of Hardwicke (Albert Edward Yorke), son of the sixth earl by Lady Sophie Georgiana, daughter of the first Earl of Cowley.
His lordship was born at the British Embassy in Paris on March 14, 1867, educated at Eton, and entered the diplomatic service, being attache to the British Embassy at Vienna from 1886 to 1891. Six years later he succeeded to the title, on the death of his father. In 1900 he was made Under Secretary of State for India by the late Lord Salisbury, one of his colleagues being the late Lord Ridley, whose death occurred this week. When Mr. Balfour reconstructed the Government in 1902 the Earl of Hardwicke was made Under Secretary for War, but he resumed his place at the India Office last year.
The Earl, who was unmarried, will be succeeded by his uncle, the Hon. John Manners, who was born in 1840, and who, after serving in the Baltic and the Crimea, retired from the British navy with the rank of captain.
