Albert Torrance was born 11 September 1909 in Hove, Sussex, England, United Kingdom to David Hood Torrance (1879-1956) and Ada Anne Stacey (1875-1937) and died 6 December 2011 London, England, United Kingdom of unspecified causes.
Biography
Albert was born in Hove, Sussex, and his family lived at 69 Blatchington Road while he was young. His father was a dentist.
In January 1935, Albert was assembled into Nat Gonella's new band, The Georgians, as lead saxophonist. They disbanded at the outbreak of World War II and Albert joined the R.A.F. bomber command. Albert continued to play saxophone throughout his lifetime, including with Freddie Bretherton's band at the Spider's Web and also with Sidney Lipton and Bert Ambrose's orchestras.
Albert celebrated his 102nd birthday in September 2011. In an interview with Jazz Services he incorrectly stated he was born near Dundee, Scotland. It was actually his paternal grandparents who came down from Scotland.
