"Alexander, who in his father's lifetime was designated Alexander of Garlies, which continued to be the chief title of the family till they were made Earls of Galloway. He m. Elizabeth, dau. of Sir Archibald Douglas, of Cavers, heritable sheriff of Teviotdale, and dying in 1501." --A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage of the British Empire, Volume 42, Part 1

Sir Alexander Stewart of Garlies: "Alexandro Stewart filio et heredi apparenti Wil. S. de Mynto, militis" (Alexander Stewart, son and heir apparent of Sir William Stewart of Minto) and his wife Elizabeth had a charter from his father for the lands of Sinlawis and Merbotillto. A charter of confirmation to this effect was issued under the Great Seal of Scotland on 13 January 1458-59 [James Balfour Paul, Advocate, FSA Scot., Registrum Magni Sigilli Regum Scotorum. The Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, A.D. 1424-1513, (Scotland's National Archives Reprinted and Presented by the Scottish Record Society in conjunction with Clark Constable, Publishers and Printers, 1984), charter number 662 on page 145]. These lands were later settled on his brother, Sir Thomas, who had a charter of them and Minto in 1476.
