Sir Alexander Stewart of Darnley was born 1342 in Darnley, Renfrewshire, Scotland to Alexander Stewart (1320-1374) and Joanna Baird (c1320-1391) and died 24 May 1402 Scotland of unspecified causes. He married Marguerite Turnbull (c1342-) 1365 JL in Scotland. He married Janet Keith (c1342-) 1382 JL in Scotland.
He was the son of Sir Alexander Stewart of Darnley. It is not known who his first wife was, but evidence that his son John Stewart of Darnley bore the emblems of Clan Turnbull as a quartering on his arms, suggests that she was of that blood. By this unknown spouse [Janet Turnbull of Minto] Darnley had six children:
- Sir William Stewart of Garlies (k.c.14 September 1402) killed in captivity by Sir Henry Percy following the Battle of Humbleton Hill. Ancestor to the present day senior branch of non "Royal" Stewarts, the Earls of Galloway.
- Alexander Stewart of Torbane and Galston
- Robert Stewart of Newtoun and Westoun
- James Stewart
- Janet Stewart, married Thomas Somerville, 1st Lord Somerville
Darnley, married secondly Janet Keith, widow of David Hamilton of Cadzow, and daughter of Sir William Keith of Galston, and was granted his wife's lands of Galston by John Stewart, Earl of Carrick. They had a son:
- William Stewart, (k.12 February 1429) killed at the Battle of the Herrings with his elder half-brother
- John Stewart of Darnley, Lord of Aubigny and Concressault, Count of Évreux (k. 12 February 1429) killed at the Battle of the Herrings.
[his father was] "Alexander Stewart of Galston (in right of his wife), almost certainly died vita patris (in the lifetime of his father) before 24 May 1402 when his son was "of Darnley," styled "filius Alexandri Senescalli de Derneley militis" about 1383 and "Dominus de Galliston" on 13 October 1390. He succeeded his father and received a charter from John, Earl of Carrick (afterwards King Robert III.)." Sources Balfour Paul, Sir James, Scots Peerage, IX vols. Edinburgh 1904.
