Alfred Burgess was born 20 December 1874 in Yass, New South Wales, Australia to Luke Henry Burgess (1839-1921) and Maria Jane Tate (1842-1920) and died 29 November 1941 Yass District Hospital, Yass, New South Wales, Australia of unspecified causes. He married Caroline Shaw (1870-1939) 2 May 1906 in Yass, New South Wales, Australia.

Obituary
The death occurred at the Yass District Hospital last Saturday of Mr. Alfred Burgess, at the age of 68 years. The deceased was very well known in the Yass district. He was born at Yass and after acquiring the property "The Lagoons" at Rye Park, went on to Young, where he purchased a property which he worked for some years. Later he purchased a property at Penrith. After being in that latter district for some time he came back to Yass and purchased "Murrumville" grazing property. In later years he resided at "Winstone," Byalla, and returned to Yass to live a few months ago.
The deceased was well known for his generosity to all deserving causes and in his younger days took a keen interest in politics and matters affecting the man on the land. He was a keen and capable agriculturist
and progressive in his methods. His wife died in August, 1939.
He is survived by one son, James, of "Winstone," Gunning, and two daughters, May, who went overseas with the first company of V.A.D., and Rae, a sister at the Narrandera Hospital, who has enlisted with the A.I.F. and is waiting to be called up to go overseas, two brothers, Edward (Burren Junction), Henry (Yass) and four sisters, Mesdames H. Radke (Sydney), T. E. Coplan (Wollongong), M. A. Grieves and E. Grieves
(Yass).
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon from the Methodist Church to the Methodist portion of the Yass Cemetery. The service at the church and graveside was conducted by the Rev. L. E. Brooks, and the arrangements were in charge of Mr. Walter McIntosh. Members of the Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge acted as pall-bearers and formed a guard of honour at the cemetery.
