Alfred Dexter French was born 1842 in West Stockbridge, MA to Alanson A French and Catherine Rice French.  When he was 18, the family moved to central Illinois and then bought a farm north of Amboy, IL.   Alfred enlisted in the Illinois 89th regiment in 1862 and ultimately was wounded at Chicamagua.  He recovered, worked at a train station in Hamlet, IN and married Anna Patterson Rundel.  The railroad moved him to Emerson, Iowa in 1874, and he lived the rest of his  life there, advancing to become president of a local bank.  He died in 1939.
