Allen Freeman Smithson was born 14 February 1816 in Pendleton, Anderson County, South Carolina, United States to James Bartlett Smithson (1767-1838) and Sarah Blanks Weatherford (1780-1866) and died 27 September 1877 Paria, Kane County, Utah, United States of unspecified causes. He married Lettisha Hollis Holladay (1823-1849) 9 April 1840 in Marion County, South Carolina. He married Jennette Burton Taylor (1826-1912) 16 December 1849 in Utah.


Mississippi Saints 1846 Pioneer Company

Numbered amoung the participants in the Mississippi Saints 1846 Pioneer Company, a early Mormon pioneer wagon train that left Mississippi in 1846 to join the Mormon exodus to Utah. This group Brigham Young's vanguard company and spent the winter of 1846/47 at Fort Pueblo where the were joined by soldiers of the sick detachment of the Mormon Battalion. They reached Salt Lake City in late summer of 1847.

Obituary of Allen Freeman Smithson:

At Pahreah Kane County, September 27th, 1877, at 2 o'cock a.m., of typhoid fever, ALLEN FREEMAN SMITHSON, son of Bartley and Sarah Smithson, aged 61 years, 7 months and 16 days. Deceased was born February 11th, 1816, at Pendleton County, South Carolina, and was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints December 7th, 1843, by Elder Benjamin Clapp, in Marion County, Alabama. He emigrated with the Saints to Utah, and arrived in Salt Lake City July 29th, 1847. In 1851 he went to California, remained there until the fall of 1857, and returned to Utah and settled at Beaver, Beaver County, and from there volunteered to go and build of the south. Arrived in Washington County in 1859, and endured the hardships of Dixie faithfully until 1872, when he was called by Prest. F. Snow to Pahreah, where he acted as Bishop of the Pahreah Ward until his death, and as President of the United Order, which was organized in 1874, and was a faithful worker therin until his death. He was a kind husband and father and was beloved by all who knew him. He was the father of nineteen children. He leaves a large family and many friends to mourn his loss. He was an honest, upright and an industrious man, and died a faithful Latter-day Saint, and in hopes of a glorious resurrection.
