The Alrede family was part of the Norman nobility in France by virtue of their ancestral origins and their land holdings. They were one of the many families that migrated from Scandinavia to Normandy during the Viking Age, and they settled there after the region was conquered by the Vikings in the 9th and 10th centuries.
Their original surname or title in Normandy is unclear, as records from that period are sparse and incomplete. However, it is likely that they had a different surname or title before they adopted the name "Alrede" in England. The Alrede name is believed to have been derived from the Old English words "æl" (meaning "all") and "ræd" (meaning "counsel"), suggesting that the family may have been known for their wise counsel or leadership abilities.
