Family History

Savage (pg.49) states: “John was the only son of William Ames.” The Ames families in Bridgewater and Easton are one family, descended from John and Cyprian (Browne) Ames of Bruton, Somerset, England. John and Cyprian's son William and and his wife Hannah (___) settled in Braintree about 1638. Their son John was born in Braintree and removed to Bridgewater by 1672. The line to the renowned Ames family of Easton is William, John, Thomas, Thomas, John, Oliver. Oliver removed from Bridgewater to Easton by 1803, when he founded the shovel manufacturing business that grew and prospered under his sons Oliver Jr. and Oakes.

John and Cyprian's son John came to Duxbury by 1643 and married Elizabeth Hayward about 1645. He was an original proprietor of Bridgewater and removed there in 1656. He had no children and left his large estate to his brother William's son John and to the sons of John.

The Marshfield Eames family is a completely different family. The immigrant founders were Anthony Eames and his wife Margery (___), who probably came from Dorsetshire, England. In later years (by about 1800) some members of this family spelled their surname "Ames".

South Easton is a village in Easton, which is in Bristol County, Massachusetts. Norton was the first town formed in the Taunton North Purchase, and from it and the unincorporated land in the Purchase were formed Easton and Mansfield. Most of the early Easton families were originally either Taunton families or Bridgewater families.
