Obituary

MRS. ANN ELIZA HAYES

THERE passed away somewhat suddenly at the residence of her daughter, Mrs S. W. Maisey, George-street, Windsor, on Monday morning, 12th instant, Mrs Ann Eliza Hayes, a well-known and highly respected identity of the Hawkesbury district, at the ripe age of 82 years. The late Mrs Hayes was a remarkable old lady, and, not withstanding her great age, had enjoyed good health until three days before her demise, when she took a bad turn and succumbed to heart failure. She retained all her faculties to the end.

Born at Freeman's Reach, the deceased was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Edward Izzard, two of the district's earliest and best known pioneers, and was married at Pitt Town at the age of 19 to Mr Thomas Hayes, who died about 37 years ago. She had lived in the district all her life, and during the past three years, with her daughter, Mrs Maisey, in Windsor.

The late Mrs Hayes was a kindly old soul, and possessed a bright and happy disposition. She was a good Christian woman, and was beloved and respected by a wide circle of friends, among whom, genuine regret was expressed when her death became known. She was a homely woman, and was greatly attached to her family of seven sons and three daughters, all of whom survive viz., Marion Beecha (Mrs W. H. O'Brien, Windsor), Hilton (Freeman's Reach), Minnie (Mrs Arthur Farlow, Lismore), Arthur (Windsor), Albert (Newcastle), William (Windsor), Linda (Mrs S. W. Maisey, Windsor), Ernest (Newcastle), Clen. (Auburn) and Rol. (Windsor). There are 35 grand-children and 14 great-grandchildren.

The funeral took place on Tuesday, 13th instant, the remains being laid to rest in St. Matthew's Church of England cemetery, Windsor. Prior to the interment, the Rector (Rev. Norman Jenkyn) conducted a service in the historic church, and during the course of an address paid a glowing tribute to the life and work of the deceased, who, he said, had returned from Sydney a few days before her death, which was most unexpected.
