Ann Maria Powers was born circa 1812 in England, United Kingdom to Thomas Powers (bef1812-) and Sarah Cook (bef1812-) and died 2 January 1914 Dungog, New South Wales, Australia of unspecified causes. She married John Cocking (c1804-1841) .

Arrived as the convict Ann Cocking sentenced to 10 years (not 15 as recorded in Australia records) on the "Planter" on 29 October 1839, one of the last convict transports to New South Wales. Ticket of Leave granted 14 February 1846 on condition that she stayed in the Dungog area.

Her husband John Cocking, also sentenced to 10 years, was transported on the Marquis of Hastings, which arrived 7 months earlier on 16 March 1839. He, however, instead of being sent to New South Wales, was sent to Tasmania. The accomplice in their crime, Benjamin Buggey, was transported on the same ship.

Sentenced Old Bailey 20 August 1838. She was sentenced to 10 years transportation at the age of 20 years as was her husband John Cocking, 34 years, and their accomplice Benjamin Buggey, 17 years. They were were "indicted for a robbery on Charles Pearson, on the 19th of August, putting him in fear, and taking from his person and against his will, 1 hat, value 9s.; 1 pair of gloves, value 1s.; 2 half-crowns and 7d.; his goods and monies; and immediately before and at the time of the said robbery striking and beating him." Ann, a prostitute, had "enticed" Charles Pearson out of a pub and into a field, where, while they were on the ground, John Cocking and Benjamin Buggey beat him and stole the goods from his person.
