Apphia Quicke Freeman Prence was born 1604 in Mawlyn, Kent, England to William Quicke (c1573-1615) and Elizabeth Hodges (c1575-1617) and died 1 August 1668 Plymouth Colony, Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts of unspecified causes. She married Samuel Freeman (1595-1639) 1625 in England. She married Thomas Prence (1600-1673) 1648 in Plymouth Colony, Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
Marriage and Family
1st Marriage : Samuel Freeman
Apphia Quicke married first to Samuel Freeman (1595-1639) in England in the 1620s. They had one son and then sailed in 1630 with Gov. Winthrop and his great fleet to establish the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They had two more children. She divorced him prior to his death.
Affair with William Clarke
In the 1640s Boston, there are legal documents that refer to an apparent affair between Apphia and William Clarke, the husband of her sister Elizabeth Quicke. During this time her husband Samuel had been sailed back to England to settle various legal affairs and was imprisoned for a time.
2nd Marriage: Gov. Prence
After her divorce, she married Thomas Prence (1600-1673) who in 1657 succeeded William Bradford to become the popular governor of Plymouth Colony.
