Augustus William Federick Spencer Loftus was born 4 October 1817 to John Loftus, 2nd Marquess of Ely (1770-1845) and Anna Maria Dashwood (c1790-1857) and died 7 March 1904 Surrey, England, United Kingdom of unspecified causes. He married Emma Maria Greville (c1819-1902) 9 August 1845 .
Lord Augustus William Frederick Spencer Loftus GCB, PC (4 October 1817 – 7 March 1904) was a British diplomat and colonial administrator.
Loftus was the fourth son of John Loftus, 2nd Marquess of Ely. He entered the diplomatic service in 1837 as attaché at Berlin and was likewise attaché at Stuttgart in 1844. He was secretary to Stratford Canning in 1848, and after serving as secretary of legation at Stuttgart (1852), and Berlin (1853), was envoy at Vienna (1858), Berlin (1860) and Munich (1862). He became Ambassador at Berlin (1865), to the North German Confederation (1868-71) and to Saint Petersburg (1871-79).[1] Later he was Governor of New South Wales (4 August 1879 – 10 November 1885).[2] He married Emma Maria Greville, after whom the town of Emmaville, New South Wales was named in 1882.[3]
