  • 922-923: Queen of West Francia

Béatrice Carolingian of Vermandois was born 880 in Paris, France to Herbert I de Vermandois (c848-907) and Bertha de Morvois (c850-c907) and died after 26 March 931 Soissons, France of unspecified causes. She married Robert I of France (866-923) 896 JL in Paris, France.

Beatrice of Vermandois was a Carolingian aristocrat, queen of Western Francia by marriage to Robert I of France (866-923), and mother of Hugh the Great.

Marriage to King of France

Hugues le Grand duc des Francs

Beatrice's son was Hugh the Great, ancestor of many kings.

Her father made a marriage pact with the King of France, giving him, his daughter Beatrice in marriage. The same pact provided that Robert's sister Adele would marry Beatrice's brother Heribert II. Beatrice married circa 890, becoming the second wife of Robert I of France (866-923), Margrave of Neustria, who became the King of France in 922.[1]

This would be Robert's 2nd marriage. Together they had:

  1. Hugh the Great (898-956), who was later dux Francorum.[2] Hugh was the father of King Hugh Capet.[2]
  2. Richilda of France (895-931) (??? No sources)

Through her marriage to Robert I, she was an ancestress of the Capetian dynasty. On 15 June 923 her husband Robert was killed at the Battle of Soissons shortly after which their son Hugh was offered the crown but refused.[3] Beatrice died in 931.[4]

Research Notes

The Oxford History of Medieval Europe shows a family tree with Beatrice as the wife of Robert I, Duke of France, daughter of Herbert I de Vermandois, and sister of Herbert II de Vermandois. It also says that her brother Herbert II was a crucial ally of both her husband and her son Hugh the Great.

The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy page for Robert I, Duke of France says that in the Historia Francorum Senonensis she is "sororem Herberti", the wife of "Robertus princeps". She and Robert I were married about 897.
