Biography

Baldwin V, was the Count of Flanders from 1035 to 1067. He was born around 1012, the son of Baldwin IV of Flanders (980-1036) and his wife, Ogive von Luxemburg (c990-1036).

Baldwin V became the Count of Flanders at a young age, after the death of his father. His mother, Ogive, acted as regent until Baldwin came of age. During his reign, Baldwin worked to consolidate his power and expand the territories of Flanders. He conducted military campaigns against neighboring territories, including Holland and the Holy Roman Empire.

One of the most significant events of Baldwin's reign was his participation in the Norman Conquest of England. Baldwin provided military support to William the Conqueror during his invasion of England in 1066, and his troops fought alongside the Normans at the Battle of Hastings.

From 1060 to 1067 Baldwin was the co-regent with Anna of Kiev for his nephew Philip I of France, indicating the importance he had acquired in international politics.

Baldwin V of Flanders likely spoke Old Dutch or Old Flemish as his native language. During his time, the region of Flanders (located in what is now modern-day Belgium and parts of France and the Netherlands) was predominantly Dutch-speaking, with a distinct local dialect.
