Benjamin Cleveland was born 28 May 1738 in Orange County, Virginia, United States to John Cleveland (1714-1778) and Elizabeth Coffee (1714-1770) and died 15 October 1806 Madison, Oconee County, South Carolina, United States of unspecified causes. He married Mary Graves (1738-1800) 17 April 1764 in Orange County, Virginia, United States.

He is best remembered for his service as a colonel in the Wilkes County Regiment of the North Carolina militia during the War of Independence, and in particular for his role in the American victory at the Battle of Kings Mountain .
