Biography
Admiral Benjamin Hallowell-Carew was born 1 January 1761 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States to Benjamin Hallowell (1725-1799) and Mary Boylston (1722-1795) and died 2 September 1834 of unspecified causes. He married Ann Inglefield (c1776-1850) April 1800 in Gibraltar.
Born Benjamin Hallowell, he was a senior officer in the Royal Navy. He was one of the select group of officers, referred to by Lord Nelson as his "Band of Brothers", who served with him at the Battle of the Nile.
He was possibly born on 1 January 1761 in Boston, Massachusetts, where his British father, former naval captain Benjamin Hallowell (1725-1799), was Commissioner of the Board of Customs during the Boston Tea Party. His mother, Mary Boylston (1722-1795), was the daughter of Thomas Boylston (1690-1739), and a first cousin of Susanna Boylston, the mother of the 2nd President of the United States, John Adams (1735-1826), and grandmother of the 6th President, John Quincy Adams (1767-1848). He was a brother of Ward Nicholas Hallowell-Boylston (1749-1828) and a nephew of Governor Moses Gill.
