Sir Bruce Houlton Slane, KNZM, CBE, was born 10 August 1931 in Auckland, New Zealand to John Houlton (Jack) Slane (1892-1974) and Emily Mavis (Elma) Wakeman (1899-1979) and died 7 January 2017 Auckland, New Zealand of unspecified causes. He married Penelope Ann Grant (1932-2016) 1955 .


Sir Bruce Houlton Slane , CBE (10 August 1931 – 7 January 2017) was a New Zealand public servant and lawyer. He served as New Zealand's first Privacy Commissioner from 1993 to 2003.[1]

Slane's wife, Penelope, Lady Slane, died on 28 December 2016. Sir Bruce died ten days later, on 7 January 2017.[2]

Education

Slane was educated at Takapuna Grammar School and Auckland University, graduating with a law degree in 1957.[1]

Career

Slane was a member of the Auckland law firm Cairns Slane from 1957. He left to become New Zealand's first Privacy Commissioner in 1992, serving until 2003.

He had a part-time position as Broadcasting Tribunal Chairman, over a twelve-year period, and was a member of immigration tribunals. He was (by 2013) the only New Zealander to be elected to the management committee of the International Bar Association. He became a regular panellist on the afternoon show of Radio New Zealand National. On 3 October 2013, in the course of discussing the new approach to house insurance, he said his house was built in 1968.

Honours

In the 1985 New Year Honours, Slane was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, in recognition of his service as president of the New Zealand Law Society, a position he had attained in 1978.[3] He was appointed a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to personal and human rights and the law, in the 2003 New Year Honours.[4] He accepted the redesignation as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009, following the reintroduction of titular honours by the New Zealand government.[1]

He once won the PRINZ Communicator of the Year title.

Sir Bruce's son Chris Slane (1957) is a cartoonist, whose work has been used in Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, the USA, and Great Britain.
