Count Caribert de Laon was born before 705 to Martin de Laon (c660-bef696) and Bertrada of Prüm (670-) and died before 762 of unspecified causes.

Charibert of Laon was a Frankish nobleman who was descended from the Merovingian kings. Charibert was a powerful figure in Frankish politics and was closely connected to the royal family.[1]

Only his mother, Bertrada of Prüm, is known from contemporary records as the two signed the foundation act of the Abbey of Prüm in 721.[2] The same year, also with his mother, he made a donation to the Abbey of Echternach. Charibert's father possibly was Martin of Laon.

Bertrada of Laon's parents were both important figures in Frankish politics, and their connections and influence helped shape Bertrada's life and career. Bertrada was a remarkable woman in her own right, known for her intelligence and political acumen.

Charibert died before 762, as stated in an act of his daughter and son-in-law.

Abbey Foundation

Only his mother is known from contemporary records. In 721, Charibert signed, with his mother Bertrada of Prüm the foundation act of the Abbey of Prüm. The same year, also with his mother, he made a donation to the Abbey of Echternach. By 744, his daughter Bertrada of Laon had married Pippin the Younger, Mayor of the Palace of Neustria and Burgundy and later king of the Franks.

Research Notes

Note that the identity of his father is speculative.

  1. He was the son of Bertrand of Laon and his wife Gisela, and he was the Count of Laon, which was a region in the north of modern-day France.
  2. He was the son of Martin de Laon and Bertrada of Prum ?
