This category contains people of the rank of German nobility, normally designated by the nobiliary particles "von" or "zu" added to their surnames. This rank may or may not be hereditary. Since 1919 nobility is no longer legally recognized. Noble titles and designations were not abolished in Germany, however, and have been commonly retained as part of the family name.
