The Metropolitan Areas of Sweden, "Storstadsområden" ("Greater City Areas" in Swedish), are statistical regions defined by Statistics Sweden. There are three of them, surrounding the three largest cities in Sweden:

  • Greater Stockholm (pop.: 1,695,946),
  • Greater Gothenburg (pop.: 879,298) and
  • Greater Malmö (pop.: 605,000).

All three areas can also be counted to larger urban regions:

  • Stockholm-Mälaren Region,
  • A larger part of Västra Götaland County (including Borås) + Kungsbacka Municipality, and
  • Öresund Region respectively.

These larger regions are political, not statistical regions, formed by municipalities and counties for metropolitan cooperation.
