Missional Christianity has at least two meanings with some controversy. In a generic sense it is a missionary emphasis of Christianity that stresses obedience to the Great Commission of Jesus and sees mission as primarily evangelistic proclamation. However Missional is also a term used by participants in the emerging church movement to express a holistic view of mission as expressed by the Anglican 5 Marks of Mission. The term "missional church" was first introduced to the public in 1988 with the publication of The Missional Church: A Vision for the Sending of the Church in North America, edited by Darrell Guder.
