The Algarve is the southernmost part of what is now Portugal. It was conquered by King Afonso III but kept a separate identity. Afonso and his heirs referred to themselves as King of Portugal and King of the Algarve. King Afonso V added substantial properties in what is now Morocco. This was initially referred to as the "Algarves beyond the sea". His heirs referred to themselves as King of the Algarves (on both sides of the sea).
