These titles were created from 1804 onwards by Napoleon I of France. There exist three different types of princes of the Empire:
- Imperial princely titles: members of the Imperial family (princes Bonaparte)
- Sovereign princly titles: people who were vassals of the Empire (princes of Bénévent and princes of Neuchâtel)
- Victorious princly titles: people who received victory titles (princes of Eckmühl, princes of Essling, princes de la Moskowa and princes of Wagram)
