Software engineering is the application of computer sciences, project management, and other techniques to create software.
While it started out as a mathematical discipline, software engineering now has the characteristics of an engineering discipline. However, like other engineering disciplines there is a wide range of practices. For instance, in some subfields certification is available, while in other fields some practitioners regard themselves more as craftsmen than engineers.
