Mr. Charles Booby, an old resident of the district, died at his home at Jackalass on Sunday evening last, at the age of 56 years. About six months ago deceased went down to an attack of dropsy, and although he was treated by Gundagai and Tumut doctors, and was for a time an inmate of Tumut Hospital, his case was hopeless. He leaves a wife and a grown-up family of five sons and three daughters, and several grandchildren.
Deceased was one of Gundagai's earliest reef miners, and about 40 years ago worked several shows in the Reno locality, with fairly successful results. At Long Flat he put down the first shaft on Messrs Robinson and Rice's ground, about 100 yards from where rich gold finds were made a few years ago. Mr Booby sank on a galena lode, and the golden ore was put through a primitive battery at Jones' Creek, which lost a good deal of the gold contents The old shaft is still in existence, and some of the drill holes (about two inches in diameter) are discernable. The funeral took place on Tuesday, the remains being interred in the Catholic cemetery at North Gundagai.
