Charles McKenzie was born 20 February 1920 in Wyndham, Southland District, Southland Region, New Zealand to Ada Beatrice McKenzie (1899-1976) and died 11 August 1944 Florence, Tuscany, Italy of war wounds.

A story handed down through the descendants from several reliable sources that Thomas Moore Arthur (1859-1934) was originally engaged to Amy Evelyn Swale (1864-1917) but got her sister Harriet Mary Ann Swale (1861-1945) pregnant.
T M A's father, also named Thomas Moore Arthur, insisted that his son marry Harriet.
Amy Evelyn married Duncan McKenzie and had a daughter Hannah McKenzie (1897-1942), who married her first cousin William Francis Arthur (1895-1964), a son of Harriet.
William and Hannah married in 1922 and (in addition to children from their own union) reared the illegitimate son of Hannah, Thomas Neil McKenzie (1916-1993), and also the illegitimate son of Hannah’s sister, Ada Beatrice McKenzie (1899-1976) (Charles Whitney McKenzie (1920-1944)).
