He was an American architect and director of the American Academy in Rome from 1935 until his death in 1940.

Chester Holmes Aldrich was born on April 7, 1871, in Cleveland, Ohio. He studied architecture at Harvard University, where he received his Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1895. After completing his studies, Aldrich worked in various architectural firms, gaining experience and honing his skills.

In 1905, Aldrich co-founded the architectural firm Aldrich & Deacon in New York City, along with Delos D. Deacon. The firm became well-known for its work in designing luxurious residences, particularly in the Colonial Revival style. They worked on numerous projects in prestigious locations, including Newport, Rhode Island, and Long Island's Gold Coast.

Apart from his successful architectural practice, Chester Holmes Aldrich made significant contributions to the field of architectural education and preservation. He served as the president of the Architectural League of New York and was involved in several architectural societies and organizations.

In 1922, Aldrich was appointed the director of the American Academy in Rome, a renowned institution that supports advanced research and artistic practice in the arts and humanities. During his tenure, he made substantial efforts to strengthen the academy and promote its mission. Under his leadership, the academy saw expansions and improvements, including the construction of new buildings and the development of its educational programs.
