Hjørring
Map of northern Vendsyssel-Thy.
Hjørring (Danish pronunciation: [ˈjɶɐ̯e̝ŋ]) is a town on the island of Vendsyssel-Thy at the top of the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. It is the main town and the administrative seat of Hjørring Municipality in the North Jutland Region. The population is 25,951 (according to an official census carried on 1 January 2024). It is also one of Denmark's oldest towns, having celebrated its 750th anniversary as a market town in 1993.
Hjørring is centrally located in a sparsely populated area and serves as an urban center for large parts of especially the western and central.Vendsyssel.
May records list their home town as: Skræm, Øster Han, , Danmark.
- Øster Han - no such place found in Wikipedia or Google Maps.
- Skræm, is a small Danish village this quite a distance away (78 kilometers) from Hjørring, Denmark
Saint Olaf's Church located on a hill in Hjørring's old town center.
Saint Olaf's Church (Danish: Sankt Olai Kirke) is a church in Hjørring, Denmark. This small church from about 1200, dedicated to Saint Olaf and built in Romanesque style, is located on a hill in Hjørring's old town center. Originally Catholic, it is now Evangelical Lutheran as of many years now.
The altarpiece has framework in Renaissance style, and is probably made by Niels Ibsen, with paintings from the 18th century and "Christ and Nicodemus" from around 1910 by A. Hou. The Renaissance pulpit was added in 1604 by Niels Ibsen. The new baptismal font is made of sandstone. The older font is now at the Vendsyssel Historical Museum. The church organ with 17 voices is from 1972.
Snaps Story
The Snaps Story written by Gunvor Johnsen, a great great granddaughter. Her great grandmother was Amalie and the Christensen's great grand father was Carl Christian.
All the kids in the Amalie Christensen great-grand family know of the "snaps-story", because that was one our grandfather told us when we were little, whenever he wanted to entertain telling stories about grandma's family in Vendsyssel.
As time has passed, we all remember small bits, but not the whole story. Now, finally, after having collected bit by bit and the names of all the family members, I can tell the snaps-story as it truly happened.
The snaps-story took place in the 1850's and it is about great-great granddad, Christen Larsen Agesen, called Kræ'n and his eldest son, Jesper Peder Christensen (1830-), never called anything but Peter. Peter was the only surviving child from Kræ'n's first marriage, and being born in 1830, he was in his 20's when our story took place. Kræ'n was in his mid 50's.
In those days most good had to be transported by ship or boat and there was a lot of sailing on the Limfjord. Poor people had a little extra earnings sailing a boat called a Limfjord Sjægt, a rowing boat with tackle and gear for sailing with sails too.
One very foggy day, Kræ'n and Peter went for a row. Maybe they were taken by surprise by the fog on their return, because they had to stop half way home and wait for better weather. While waiting, being bored and cold, one could take one snaps, and as the situation dragged out, one could take one more, maybe even two or three, perhaps just to spend the time. Yes? At a certain point, Peter found that father had had enough. It seemed as if his drinking became more dangerous to their situation than the fog! They quarreled about it and at a certain time Peter took his chance and threw the bottle overboard. But father Kræ'n was a strong man and being drunken gave him some extra strength so out went Peter in the same direction after the bottle. The water was cold and the visibility low, but nothing helped poor Peter. He had to swim his way home all by himself.
Peter never saw his childhood home again. He became a sailer. He is known to have been to Aalborg, the nearby town, because from there he sent a message, twice, for his mother to come and see him. Actually, it was his stepmother, (Carl's and Amalie's mother), but she had taken care of him since he was 3 1/2 years old, and he loved her. On one of the visits to Aalborg he gave her a gift: a ship in a frame he had carved for her during long watches at night at sea.
When she died in 1858, Kræ'n wrote a letter to his eldest daughter, Karen Marie, who worked as a baker in Aalborg. In this letter Kræ'n tells her that her beloved mother is dead and if she is aware of where her brother, Peter, is to be found, will she please pass on the sad message?
Kræ'n died in 1877. A list of his children's whereabouts at that time is to be found in the papers concerning the meeting of heirs. Here, Peter is known to have "emigrated to America". That is all we know. I have not been able to trace him in any American registration.

1858 Letter
Letter to oldest daughter, Karen Marie, upon the death of her mother in 1858
From: Vestre Skovhus den 22de Marts, 1858
Dear Daughter! With tears of sorrow, I must inform you that it pleased the Almighty God, yesterday afternoon at 3 pm to call way your dearly beloved Mother from this life.
Dear daughter, you must ultimately write to your brother, Peter, to let him know the sorrowful fate of your mother's death. In case you do not know where he is, then inquire to Andreas Jensen, who knows where he is living. Now you should ultimately, dear daughter, together with Peter come home the first coming Sunday the 28th of March.
In the event that thou can come some days earlier, I would desire that, for there is much as you know, in this time for me to do here at home. With friendliest greetings from me, your deeply sorrowing father and you brothers and sisters.
