Cline Brooks Ostrander (April 23, 1920 - March 17, 1979) was a steam propulsion system Project Manager with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia, and after retiring, a realtor in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area. He descended from Dutch settlers who arrived in New Netherland (present day New York) in the 1660s.


Biography[]

Cline Brooks "Hank" Ostrander was the oldest son of Arthur Frederick Ostrander (1895 - 1979) and Annie Caribel Campen (Ostrander) (1896 - 1971) He was born April 23, 1920 in Norfolk County, Virginia, in the "South Norfolk" area. He attended public schools, and graduated from South Norfolk High School in 1938. He attended the Apprentice School at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia, and after graduating, became employed as a Boilermaker. He married Shirley Beale (August 23, 1920 - February 8, 1975) on April 14, 1941, at the Parsonage of Chesapeake Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church, South Norfolk, Virginia.

He entered the United States Army June 28, 1945 prior to the end of World War II and saw service in the European Theater as Sergeant in the Tank Corps. He became a Tank Commander of an M4 Sherman Tank and served in this capacity through the end of the war and the occupation period. He returned from Europe December 24, 1946, and was discharged from the Army on January 31, 1947. He returned to his job at the shipyard after this.

He later rose thhrough the ranks of the Federal Civil Service, becoming a Planner and Estimator, then a Steam Propulsion Typedesk, and finally a Project Manager. He had the rare accomplishment of actually commanding a Naval Vessel (a drydock) as a civilian GS-12 government employee. He retired in 1975 and became a realtor.

He and his wife had one son, Gregory Brooks Ostrander, born 1962. Shirley Beale died in 1975.

Cline Brooks Ostrander was a Master Mason, and a member of Bayside Lodge in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was also actively involved in the Bayside Lion's Club, once serving as its president. He died following complications from heart surgery on March 17, 1979, and was interred next to his wife in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Virginia Beach, Virginia.
