The area is mostly farmland and location of an agricultural branch of Sydney University. At the southern end of the suburb, bordering the Nepean River is Camden Airport, a site for gliding and skydiving. The main road, Cobbitty Road, is home to "Cobbitty Primary School", a general store, a small cafe, and the "teen ranch".
The area has views over the township of Camden. Property prices are consistent with the general Sydney Market. Cobbitty has a winery, "Cobbitty Wines" at the end of Cobbitty road, just before Warrombi Road. Macarthur Anglican School is in Cobbitty.
The area now known as Cobbitty was originally home to the Muringong, southernmost of the Darug people. Settlement began in the early 19th century following the establishment of John Macarthur's Camden Park Estate nearby.
At the 2006 census, Cobbitty had 655 people. There were slightly more men (51%) than women, opposite to the national trend. Unemployment was very low (2.2%) and employment in agriculture (4.5%) was more than double the national average although more people were employed in education (7.8%) and construction (5.6%).
Cobbitty is part of the north ward of Camden Council represented by David Funnell (currently deputy mayor of Camden), Cindy Cagney and Peter Johnson. Chris Patterson is the local mayor. The suburb is in the federal electorate of Macarthur, represented by former marathon runner Pat Farmer (Liberal), and the state electorate of Camden, held by former mayor Geoff Corrigan (Labor).
