OLD RESIDENT DEAD.—By the death of Mr. Conrad Gerke, senior, which took place in the Glen Innes Hospital on the 13th instant, one of the oldest and most respected residents of this place passed away. Mr. Gerke, who was in his 73rd year, was one of our early pioneers of this district. He arrived in this State with his wife from Germany in 1858, and in the same year took up their quarters in Deepwater and has ever since that time lived continuously in the district, where they reared a large and respectable family of sons and daughters, all of whom are settled in this district. He did not seek to amass a fortune, but was content to spend his life in honest toil, which he tenaciously continued to do up to the very end of his long and useful career. He was just the kind of man who is the bone and sinew of this country, and by whom our empire is built.
