Daniel Mayo – Eastham Land Records 1650 - 1745 Daniel Mayo was the son of John Mayo Jr. and Hannah Leycraft and the grandson of Rev. John Mayo who was minister in Eastham from about 1646 to1655. Daniel was born in 1664. He was one of eight brothers. Records indicate he died before 1715. Daniel is an example of a third generation Eastham resident who received significant land grants. [1]

  • 1703 Granted to Daniel Mayo and his heirs a parcel of meadow at Little Billingsgate on

the northwest side of Duck Creek. Dimensions or acreage are not given in the record but related records indicate this grant was at least ten acres. PDF A283, M32, S102.

Snow and Lt. Joseph Snow the second lot out of twenty-four lots laid out at Great Island at Billingsgate The dimensions given in the record were not complete but probably the lot was six or seven acres like most of the other lots at Great Island. PDF T86.

  • 1711 Granted to Daniel Mayo and his heirs about six acres for his wood lot in two

parcels. Two acres were on the westerly side of his other land at Billingsgate. The other parcel of about four acres was at Chequessett Neck next to land of Joseph Atkins. Bounds of both parcels were indicated by marked trees. PDF T154.

  • 1711 Ten acres of upland on the northerly side of Duck Creek lawfully possessed by

Daniel Mayo were granted to Thomas Prence. PDF T175.

  • 1711 Granted to Daniel Mayo and his heirs four acres at Little Billingsgate in two

parcels. About one acre was next to land of John Atwood and at the edge of a swamp. The other parcel of about three acres was at the head of Duck Creek near the Salt Hole. Bounds of both parcels were indicated by marked trees. PDF T175.

  • 1713 Due to unforeseen circumstances the Town decided to change the land granted to

Daniel Mayo in 1703 to a new parcel. A committee consisting of Joseph Paine Esq., Capt. Samuel Freeman, Isaac Pepper and Thomas Doane was appointed to lay out the new parcel at a place called Cook’s Pond and next to land of John Sweat and Joseph Atkins. Bounds were indicated by marked trees. The reason for the change and the acreage involved were not given. PDF T181.

  • 1715 Granted to Daniel Mayo and his heirs several parcels of land at Little Billingsgate.

One parcel was about eight acres on the southerly side of meadow of Daniel Mayo, deceased. Another parcel was about one acre at the westerly end of the first parcel. Another parcel was about two acres on the southerly side of Benjamin Young’s lot. Another parcel was about nine and on-half acres on the northeast side of the first lot and next to the way that went to the road to John Rich’s house. Bounds of the parcels were indicated by marked trees. PDF T252, T253.

  • 1715 Granted to Daniel Mayo and his heirs a wood lot on the easterly side of the way to

Herring Brook. The lot ran east 320 pole and north thirty-two pole which would make the lot sixty-four acres. Bounds were indicated by marked trees. PDF T296.

The land owned by Daniel Mayo and his heirs described in these records amounts to about one-hundred acres. By 1745 twenty-two more Mayos received Eastham land grants.
