Biography

David Robert Cheney was born 26 July 1884 in Adelong, New South Wales, Australia to Albert Joseph Cheney (1847-1915) and Matilda Henrietta Jane Adams (1857-1931) and died 22 June 1905 Humula, New South Wales, Australia of drowning in flood waters.

DROWNING AT HUMULA.

Details are now to hand regarding the sad drowning of Mr. David Cheney, aged 20 years, and son of Mr. Joseph Cheney.

During one of the heaviest floods of recent years, in the Humula and Carabost Creeks, the unfortunate young fellow was engaged with others in running rabbits into the flood. The rabbits had been washed out of their burrows, and whilst waiting for the ebb of the water they were perched on stumps of trees on the little islands created by the flood.

Whilst the young fellows were eagerly and heedlessly jumping from island to island David Cheney, one of the company, ran head first into a deep channel. The flood was too strong for his companions to get near without the greatest risk, so that no salvation was possible once the swift current had taken him. The scene of the accident was in Mr. M'Pherson's paddocks on the Umbango flats, the young fellow being an employee of Mr. Macpherson's. Mr. P. Nugent notified Constable Toohey, and with the help of Mr. James Cheney, a cousin, James Nugent recovered the body on the same evening. As a token of respect to the deceased certain social functions which were to have taken place early next month have been postponed for a time.
