Dewitt Fay Doty was born 3 January 1897 in Burlington, Kane County, Illinois, United States to Franklin Bake Doty (1850-1935) and Esther Ann Davison (1853-1920) . He married Ethel A. Smith (?-?) in Phoenix, Arizona, United States.
Known throughout his life as Fay, DeWitt Fay Doty was the twin of his sister May. He enlisted in the navy January 25, 1918, was discharges February 6, 1919, and re-enlisted the next day. He received a medical discharge October 13, 1920. He resided in Daytona Beach and Miami, Florida.
