In the annals, Dmitri is mentioned only once. Together with his father, who was one of the commanders of an army of several Russian principalities, he participated on May 31, 1223 in the Battle of the Kalka River (1223) against the Mongols. However, the Russian army was defeated. During the disorderly flight many princes were killed. Among them were Dmitri and his father [1].

N.A. Baumgarten, on the basis of the Lyubetskii synodik, believed that Dmitri was a prince of Chernigov [3]. However, his position was not supported by other researchers. Voytovich believes that after his father became Chernigov prince, Dmitri received the Principality of Kozelsk [2] .
