Doria Ragland was born 2 September 1956 in Los Angeles, California, United States to Alvin Azell Ragland (1929-2011) and Jeanette Arnold (1929-2000) . She married Thomas Wayne Markle (1944) 1979 .

Rachel Meghan Markle, describing her parents, has said, "My dad is Caucasian and my mom is African American ... I have come to embrace [this and] say who I am, to share where I'm from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident, mixed-race woman." Her mother, Doria Ragland, has a master's degree in social work from the University of Southern California, lives in View Park-Windsor Hills, and works as a psychotherapist and yoga instructor.
