Biography
Dudley Saltonstall was born 8 September 1738 in New London, New London County, Connecticut, United States to Gurdon Saltonstall (1708-1785) and Rebecca Winthrop (1712-1776) and died 1796 (West Indies) of yellow fever. He married Frances Nancy Babcock (1745-1787) December 1765 in Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island, United States.
He was an American naval commander during the American Revolutionary War. He is best known as the commander of the naval forces of the 1779 Penobscot Expedition, which ended in complete disaster, with all ships lost. Norton (2003) argues the Penobscot Expedition was a total failure due to poor planning, inadequate training, and timid leadership on the part of Saltonstall.
