Dunn is a city in Harnett County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,196 at the 2000 census.

It is the birthplace of early rock and roll guitar hero, Link Wray and General William C. Lee, father of the American Airborne. The city slogan is "It's all right here." The name "Dunn" honors Mr. Bennett R. Dunn, who supervised the construction of a railroad between Wilson and Fayetteville. The city of Dunn was incorporated on February 12, 1887 when it was a logging town and a turpentine distilling center. The town is home to 2 local schools. Wayne Avenue Elementary for K-5, and Dunn Middle School for 6-8. High school students attend Triton High School located in Erwin.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.2 square miles (16.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics[]

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 9,196 people, 3,797 households, and 2,422 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,482.2 people per square mile (572.7/km²). There were 4,100 housing units at an average density of 660.8 per square mile (255.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 54.56% White, 41.21% African American, 0.97% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.28% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.24% of the population.

There were 3,797 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.6% were married couples living together, 19.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 79.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,550, and the median income for a family was $39,521. Males had a median income of $31,029 versus $21,961 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,178. About 19.6% of families and 23.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 32.2% of those under age 18 and 19.2% of those age 65 or over.
