Edward Dougherty was born 18 August 1821 in Aurora, Cayuga County, New York, United States to Edward George Dougherty (1789-1844) and Annis Lake (1793-1862) and died 7 April 1902 Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, United States of unspecified causes. He married Rachel Louisa Buell (1826-1905) 1846 .
Edward attended Harvard Law School in 1843-44, returning after his marriage in Essex, VT to Owego, NY where he was the postmaster. Moving later to Battle Creek, Michigan, he edited the Michigan Tribune and set up the first steam printing press west of the Allegheny Mountains. Then the family moved to Columbus where Edward continued his newspaper work and served as an adjutant (military officer) to Col. Todd during the Civil War.
His gravestone has the inscription: 24th Battery Ohio Light Artillery
