Early Years
Missing records to prove English Birth, Marriage and birth of first children, and time of migration to New England. Whereabouts unknown until 1643 when Edward departs Weymouth to settle in Rehoboth. We don't know if first children were born in England or Weymouth Colony.
1643 Rehoboth Settlement
Edward Smith first received land grants in Weymouth prior to 1642. (p. 255- 280) About 1642-3 he sold his land in Weymouth and settled in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, before removing to Newport, Rhode Island. He died about 1676-6. A stone in his memory has been placed in the family burial ground in Middleton, RI.

Obadiah Holmes, he removed to Newport, RI as did Rev. Holmes. • 1653:5:17 Freeman at Newport. • 1654: 55: 58: 59: 65: 66 Assistant • 1655: 59 Commissioner • 1665: 66: 69 Deputy • 1667 On a committee to make a rate of levy of L150 for a prison, pound and stocks at Newport.
