Zions Camp Participant

Zionscamp01

This Judith Mehr rendition depicts struggles endured by members of Zion's Camp, an expeditionary force to help Church members in Jackson County redeem their brethren.

One of the most interesting episodes in the early history of LDS Church was the march of Zion's Camp (1834). The members of the Church in Missouri were being persecuted, and the Prophet Joseph made it a matter of prayer and received a revelation on February 24, 1834. The Lord instructed the Prophet to assemble at least one hundred young and middle-aged men and to go to the land of Zion, or Missouri. (See D&C 130:19–34.)

Zion’s Camp, a group of approximately one hundred and fifty men, gathered at Kirtland, Ohio, in the spring of 1834 and marched to Jackson County, Missouri. By the time they reached Missouri, the camp had increased to approximately two hundred men.

In 1845 Edward W. Marvin was in Michigan and involved with the church. In the minutes of January 24 conference he offers the benediction.

Move to Southern Utah

Zion's Camp roll of 1864 indicates "Marvin Edmond Walden" was living in St. George, Utah.

Burial of Edward in St. Thomas

Edward died in St. Thomas, Nevada, a town that was at first located in south-western Utah. It was in Utah in 1866, but with a change in the Nevada/Utah state line in 1867, it became part of Clark County, Nevada. The town was later covered by Lake Mead.

The St. Thomas Memorial Cemetery has records for Edward's death, although the old records for cemeteries in Moapa Valley do not have a record of his burial, the Memorial Cemetery states this for Edward's death because he was a resident of St. Thomas at the time of his death:

I am his GG-Grandson he was originally buried in St. Thomas Muddy Mission however when Lake Mead was constructed in the 30s he was moved to a boothill community gravesite outside of Overton, Nevada,(36 degrees, 31' 15.24" North by 114 degrees 26' 9.67 West)...the markers there just say Early Adult Pioneer Male.

"Marvin, Edward W.; Born: About 1803; Died: 31 Aug 1866 of fever, possible sunstroke, 63 years old.
