Obituary

Mrs. Eliza Agnes Adams.

On Friday evening last much regret was felt when it became known that one of the oldest and most esteemed residents of the district in the person of Mrs. Eliza Agnes Adams, widow of the late Mr. H. D. Adams, had died suddenly at the age of 78 years, the cause of death being a sudden stroke. Mrs. Adams was the only child of Benjamin Bradley, officer of the 99th Regiment of Infantry, London, which arrived in Australia to 1854 [NB incorrect date]. On the order to return home Mr. Bradley bought his discharge and settled in the state (then colony) as sergeant in charge of the gold police at Araluen, later settling in Narandera in the sixties. The deceased lady was a native of Goulburn, and married at Wagga in 1865, and has resided in Riverina for 66 years, and in Narandera continuously for 56 years. She claimed to have lived the longest in the municipality of Narandera, of which she was mayoress in its infancy, and with her husband, worked hard till it was established. Mrs. Adams was a devoted and unselfish mother, and her sudden death strikes a blow to a most united family, whose ranks have been sadly depleted in the last few years. She was a great reader, with a wonderful memory, and a most interesting conversationalist, who will be sadly missed by her grandchildren and many friends, who were sure of a warm welcome at "West End." The remaining members of the family are three sons and two daughters, four sons and one daughter having predeceased her. The sons are:—Messrs. Henry Bradley (Narandera), Albert Victor (Emerald Hill), Ernest Arthur (Narandera), and the daughters are Florence (Narandera), and Emily Rose (Mrs. George Devlin, Euroley). The funeral on Sunday afternoon was largely attended, and the remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the cemetery. The Ven. Archdeacon Rawling officiated. Her son, Mr. Albert Adams, of Emerald Hill, and her grandchildren residing in Sydney were unable to be present owing to Sunday intervening. The pall bearers were Messrs. M. F. Murray, W. J. Weir, D Bodinnar, and A McL. Taylor. Messrs. Watkins Bros. had charge of the funeral arrangements.
