- Mother-in-law to Charlemagne
- Bavarian countess / Duchess of Swabia
Emma of Alamannia was born 730 in Westphalia, Germany to Hnabi (c700-c775) and Hereswind (705-?) and died 789 Aachen, Germany of unspecified causes.
Hildegard (758-783) was the daughter of the Germanic Count Gerold of Vinzgouw (c725-799) (founder of the Udalriching family) and his wife Emma, in turn daughter of Duke Nebe (Hnabi) of Alemannia and Hereswintha vom Bodensee (of Lake Constance).[1] Hildegard's father had extensive possessions in the dominion of Charlemagne's younger brother Carloman, so this union was of significant importance for Charlemagne, because he could strengthen its position in the east of the Rhine and also could bind the Alemannian nobility to his side.[2]
Emma was highly respected and admired for her intelligence, piety, and political acumen. She played an important role in the Frankish court and was a trusted advisor to both her husband and Charlemagne. Emma was known for her charitable work and was a patron of several religious institutions, including the monastery at St. Gallen in Switzerland.
By his wife Hereswind, Hnabi left at least two children, Ruadbert (Rodbert, Robert), who was count in the Hegau, and Imma or Emma (died c. 785), who married Gerold of Vintzgau and was the mother of Eric of Friuli and Hildegard, wife of Charlemagne. Rodbert son of Hnabi is mentioned in a St. Gall document dated 770. Imma is mentioned in documents of Lorsch, Fulda and St. Gall between 779 and 804.
