Ephron Putnam was born on March 22, 1789 to Jonas P. Putnam and Rhoda. His father appeared in the census in 1790 in Saratoga Springs, Albany County, New York. The census information is 2-2-2. He married Phoebe Wilmarth in the early 1800s, and they moved to Chautauqua County in 1808. They settled in West Ellery, near the Quail Trap schoolhouse on lot 42. On March 5, 1810, Ephron purchased Lot 43, Town 3, Range 12 in Ellery, Chautauqua, New York. They built a log house in the wilderness, and had 11 children, of which 3 died young. They lived in Ellery at the time of the 1825 census where they had nine children. Ephron is in the 1830 census. Ephron died on January 22, 1839. He is buried in Lewis Cemetery in Maple Springs, Chautauqua, New York. Records of 1936 show over 500 descendants.
