Emmie Cotton was born circa 1772 in England, United Kingdom to Thomas Cotton (c1744-1808) and Ermine (Hermies) Hall (c1744-1817) and died July 1870 West Bromwich, West Midlands, England, United Kingdom of unspecified causes. She married John Jenks (-1823) 12 January 1797 in Much Wenlock, Shropshire, England, United Kingdom.
Correspondence with descendants in the 1980s produced the following comments or recollections:
- She was possibly the first owner of two pieces of silver in the possession of Josie Hughes" (U.S. resident), "one engraved E.C., and one E.C.J."
- Lilian Michael (Australia) had some handwoven linen from what the family called "the Cotton sheets". Lois McKeown (Belfast, Northern Ireland) remembered one with the name in tiny red cross stitch on one corner.
- One descendant said that Erminia was possibly related to the Cottons of Cotton Hall in the Midlands. There was a Cotton Hall (one of several in the world) in North Staffordshire, acquired in the 19th century by the Catholic Church for a college: http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-275077-cotton-college-cotton-staffordshire/osmap#.VoZP-U9uDDc and http://www.british-towns.net/venues/academia/cotton-college - and Wikipedia:Cotton College says this about the building: "The original house appears to date back to 1630 and was most probably built by the Morrice family before Thomas Gilbert moved there. This began an association of the Gilbert Family and the Earl of Shrewsbury as Land Agents and Industrial Entrepreneurs over the next decades till Cotton Hall was sold in 1884. ". (No mention of Cotton family!)
