Ernest Amory Codman was born 30 December 1869 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States to William Coombs Codman (1821-1903) and Elizabeth Hurd (1836-1896) and died 23 November 1940 Canton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States of unspecified causes. He married Katherine Putnam Bowditch (1870-1961) 16 November 1899 in Jamaica Plain, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States.
He was a pioneering Boston surgeon who made contributions to anaesthesiology, radiology, duodenal ulcer surgery, orthopaedic oncology, shoulder surgery, and the study of medical outcomes.
