Ernest Henry Cooper was born in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight in 1875. His father was Charles Tompson Cooper and his mother was Alice Jane Cooper. Charles was 25 and Alice 21 at his birth. He was their fourth child and eldest son.
By the time he was 4, Ernest and his family had moved to Shanklin on the Isle of Wight. In 1881 he was living at Atherley Road, Shanklin.
By the time he was 16 (in 1891), Ernest was working as a clerk and living at the family home at 3 Sydney Villa, Wilton Road in Shanklin, along with 8 of his (at the time) 9 siblings.
Some time between 1891 and 1901, Ernest left the Isle of Wight and sought out fame and fortune in London.
In 1901, Ernest was working as an ironmonger's assistant. He lived at 17 Algernon Road, Lewisham, London, lodging in the house of John Sutherland, a 41 year old carpenter and joiner. John and his wife, Sarah, had 3 children aged 13, 12 and 10, and had another lodger, Hector Doig, a Scottish-born carpenter and joiner aged 25.
Ernest married Beatrice Ethel Williams. They had five children: Percy, Eddie, Dick, Ethel and Win.
