In July 2008 we stated creating article pages in the form ".... (surname)" to hold all the material that we used to have on surname category pages.
The standard category for a surname, in the matching form ".... (surname)", now contains just eight characters:
{{SCat}}
That (Template:SCat) provides a bold boxed link to the surname article, puts the page in Category:Surnames, and adds brief text to explain. Nothing more is needed. The category display space is almost maximised for its proper purpose: listing subcategories (such as "Surname in place"), articles, and media.
If Wikipedia ever produces a matching category, which is rather unlikely, we can add Template:alsoWP.
